Non Traditional Wedding CakesWednesday, January 13th, 2010

I often find myself on the side of tradition. I do like a layered cake with frosting and flowers. Today weddings are seeing more and more cupcakes, cheesecakes, and maybe even a pie for the wedding cake. Ok, I haven’t seen a pie – yet. But you never know what the new year will hold in the way of photography.

This cheesecake played the feature in a recent cake cutting and cake smash.

Cake smash!Sunday, January 10th, 2010

Every time I look at these photographs I hear the voice of the Incredible Hulk yelling “Cake! Smash!”

I was helping photograph this wedding as a second shooter and I had the perfect angle to see the cake smash unfold. And this is the one time I will claim the title of wedding photo journalist. I was able to take about 6 frames a second with my Nikon D300 – and capture every critical moment of this cake cutting gone messy.

Wedding Cake Cutting

Sharing wedding cake

There are trends in weddings – for a long time you would never see the groom smashing cake in the bride’s face – and brides were happy – because they do spend some time on make up and looking perfect. But lately the number of cake smashings is on the rise.

And it helps to have a camera like the D300 – it has a “sport” mode that lets me capture six frames per second at 12 frame bursts. And sometimes weddings are like sporting events – if not World Wide Wrestling events.

Wedding Cake WednesdayWednesday, December 30th, 2009

I was flipping through wedding photographs through the past year and I rediscovered a wedding cake from a wedding at My Noah’s. Maybe at a later date I will post a blog post which shows the cake being assembled.

But I have been thinking how weddings are a huge team effort – and the team may not realize they are part of the team. Everyone works independently – and the photographers usually take credit. The florists should get credit for amazing floral arrangements and bouquets, bakers and cake decorators should get credit for the wedding cake creations. And then there are the wedding dresses, the location and much more.

And the photographer takes amazing pictures – often with the attitude that the wedding couldn’t happen without the photographer. I don’t want that kind of ego. However, this was a gorgeous cake.

Wedding Cake with FlowersSunday, December 20th, 2009

Ok, I will confess – I can sort of understand why people might use a stunt cake – or a fake cake? Why would you eat something or cut a cake that is more a work of art than a wedding confection? This wedding cake was photographed at Wolf Creek – and the cake was in fact real. I am told it was tasty. But my job is to photograph the heck out of the cake and make it look awesome. To do that you want a gorgeous cake – and then the rest of my job is done – lol.

Wedding Cake with Flowers

You can't cut a cake like this and eat it! It is a work of art.

Wedding Cake Photograph Created with HDR

Wedding Cake Photograph Created with HDR

I love real wedding cakes – I understand the economics of having a “stunt cake” or a fake cake where only part of the cake is real for the cake cutting ceremony. However, real cake is so much more tasty.

This cake was a carrot cake covered with real blueberries, strawberries, and currants. It was a little tricky to photograph – it was so dark and backlit. I photographed it several ways – with an off camera flash, with natural light, from outside looking in. This particular photograph was stitched together from 9 exposures and put together using HDR (High Dynamic Range).

I then edited the photograph to have a more film look – digital looks to perfect sometimes – and imitating film gives things a unique look.
