Wedding Cake with FlowersSunday, December 20th, 2009

Ok, I will confess – I can sort of understand why people might use a stunt cake – or a fake cake? Why would you eat something or cut a cake that is more a work of art than a wedding confection? This wedding cake was photographed at Wolf Creek – and the cake was in fact real. I am told it was tasty. But my job is to photograph the heck out of the cake and make it look awesome. To do that you want a gorgeous cake – and then the rest of my job is done – lol.

Wedding Cake with Flowers

You can't cut a cake like this and eat it! It is a work of art.

I am going crazy! I bought yet another camera! A Holga!Tuesday, December 15th, 2009

Someone asked me today – how many cameras do I own. I lost track after about 9 cameras. I was counting DSLRs, Video Cameras, Point and shoots, my new Bronica Medium Format camera and I just ordered yet another film camera – a Holga. Here is what the camera will look like – it is a plastic camera – with a plastic lens. It screams cheap! And it takes imperfect photos which makes this camera perfect for those who want to take a leap of faith one their photography.

I am going to have A LOT of fun during Christmas – and my family is going to hate me! And I promise – once I master film it will be available as an option – or a surprise for my wedding photography. It’ll take some practice – but I think the retro charm of film will knock people’s socks off.

And you can be sure I will be posting some of my experiments – including my failures. We learn from our failures and mistakes. That is what makes us human. People have been saying it takes about 10,000 hours to master something – I hope it doesn’t take that long for film photography. One famous dead photographer said the first 10,000 photographs are your worst. And that is back in the day of film – when a roll of film had 6, 12 or maybe 24 exposures.

I have all these lofty goals – but to become a film wedding photographer would be rather cool – would definitely make me different. But time will tell – and film is making a bit of a comeback.

Exploring the Utah Salt FlatsMonday, October 19th, 2009

Utah has some amazing landscapes – and it is perfect for photography. And I have decided I won’t charge any traveling fees for the entire state of Utah. If you have a wedding in St. George – that rocks. No travel fee. And that means if we want to have bridal photography at the Utah Salt Flats – no travel fee. I hope this means I can create gorgeous photographs around this beautiful state. Bridals in Moab anyone?

The other day I took a tour of the Utah Salt Flats and I even brought my Alien Bee studios lights with me to the location. It is about an hour and a half (maybe 2 hours) west of Salt Lake City. However, it is worth the drive – you get some amazing photographs. You can see the lighting setup that I carried out there. And check out the resulting photograph. Pretty cool photo I think.

And it takes some practice to get the lighting just right. And I love practice photo shoots. I even will team up with other photographers so we can teach each other what we know about photography.

Preview of today's bridal photography at the Provo Castle

Preview of today's bridal photography at the Provo Castle

A little while ago I petitioned anyone who wanted some post-wedding bridals. I am working on building a portfolio so I can feature some amazing photos on my website and blog. So here is a preview photograph – more will come later after I edit them this week.

Jennifer was married back in January in San Diego. She had another photographer photograph her wedding and I did have the chance to edit her wedding album. She jumped at the opportunity to have some bridals. These were taken at the Provo Castle and there are some amazing photographs. I had to share this one to whet the appetite.

This photograph is with natural light and I over exposed it. And then gave the photograph a look as if it was from SX-70 polaroid film. The nice thing about digital photography is you can make it look like film. And give it a classic look. Isn’t she gorgeous?!

Enagement photography on Salt Lake City Trak

Enagement photography on Salt Lake City Trak

Engagement photo shoots are important! It is a chance for the photographer and the happy couple to get to know each other before the wedding. I learn about the couple and your personalities and you get to know me as a photographer.

This photo shoot was in a new location for me – I am branching out in to other locations… (more…)
