Two Family Weddings in Two Weeks!Thursday, January 19th, 2012

Yep, it is true – there were two weddings in my family in the last 2 months. In fact the weddings were only 2 weeks apart. The last sibling to be married was my sister – eleven years ago. So to have 2 so close together is probably a bit odd. And I was the wedding photographer for both weddings – woo hoo!

I will be blogging the photographs later when they are ready for publishing. In the meantime I figured I would share the two family photographs.

The first photograph features the family portrait from the Salt Lake wedding. My brother Jonathan (the youngest of 7 kids) married Kelli Jo in the Salt Lake City Temple.

My brother Joel married Carissa 2 weeks later at the Snowflake Arizona Temple. My brother Paul wasn’t able to make it out for that wedding so I will be adding him with the power of Photoshop.

Our family is very excited for our new sister-in-laws! They are awesome and they have really meshed well with our family. Most importantly they enjoy our family’s sense of humor – which is important ;)

Now if we can find someone for my sister…

Lisa and Noah’s Wedding Day in Newport Beach CaliforniaSunday, March 21st, 2010

I had been looking forward to this wedding for about 9 months! So far they have the record for scheduling their wedding – in Utah people will often plan and schedule their wedding with about 2 months of warning. Outside of Utah is another story. And wedding in Spring in California is just perfect. Clear blue skies, the beach near by and a truly fun couple in love.

Lisa found me and my photography through Facebook of all places – and she is a student out in Chicago. Her boy toy, Noah, was living out in California so we were all over the country on this wedding. We photographed their engagements the day before the wedding.

I hope to get out to California more often – it puts Utah to shame ;)

For most of the portraits I am using my portable softbox with a speedlight to create these photographs. That really helps the photographs look perfect right out of the camera – and little retouching is needed. In fact I can then get the photographs edited and posted on SmugMug for viewing and purchases faster. I also had rented a Canon 5D Mark II while mine is in the shop for repairs. I did use my Nikon cameras a little bit – but I can create some serious magic with that Canon 50mm f/1.2 lens.

We only had about an hour to photograph portraits before heading over to the reception at the Balboa Inn on Newport Beach. So we made good use of our time and we wanted to get a few photographs on the pier as well. I would recommend a much time as possible for the photographs – an hour is minimum! We can create some amazing photographs we a few hours if possible. And if we can avoid photographs at high noon – even better. So if you are getting married let’s talk and find out when the best time of day would be to take your wedding portraits.

And now for some photographs of the wedding reception and some of the wedding details. The cake cutting even had chanting – they really wanted a cake smash and they were not disappointed. Both the bride and the groom were able to score some frosting to the face. And then they had some creative clean up.

And to round out the night was dancing, dancing, dancing! A perfect activity for any wedding reception and much better than the Utah tradition of standing in a line to shake hands for 2 hours. (In my humble opinion)

And here are a few photographs from earlier in the day as the couple prepared for the day. Always photograph the dress before hand and any details you can. This is fly on the wall photography and ninja photography – stay out of the way and capture some moments of photojournalism.

Newport Beach LDS Temple in HDRSaturday, March 20th, 2010

One project that I will be working on will be to photograph the wedding locations of temples, churches, and such. So the day before I grabbed my cameras, tripod, and cable release to take some photographs of the Newport Beach Temple. The temple is a sacred building for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

And the temple is a beautiful building with great landscaping – so here are a few of the photographs. I wasn’t able to photograph during sunset because I was photographing the engagements at that time. But with HDR I am able to photograph the temple with the sun in the composition – you can’t do that without HDR.

Looking forward to the Newport Beach WeddingThursday, January 7th, 2010

It is weird to think that my first big wedding that I photographed was 2 years ago in Newport Beach, California. My cousin, Angelina married Nghiep Dang in the Newport Beach Temple in California. It is fun to look back at some of my old weddings – especially since my next wedding is in March and is again at the Newport Beach Temple.

In two years I have grown as a photographer – my skills have improved and developed – yet I always get nervous and excited about an upcoming wedding.

So it will be fun to compare the photographs from 2 years ago with the photos I will capture and create in March. And of course it’ll be fun to be back in California – I love California.

I will be driving down to California – I thought it would be fun to have a bit of a road trip. I can stop in Vegas for a few photographs and I can explore spring along the highway. I am sure that if I travel more and more to other states to photograph weddings I may save time and fly. But when driving I can enjoy the drive and I can also bring more camera gear.

It is going to rock!

Looking forward to a Newport Beach WeddingTuesday, December 8th, 2009

Today I spent two and a half hours in the car driving to work – so much snow and I think for the first hour and a half I was averaging 3 miles per hour. So I will easily confess I am looking forward to spring to thaw out. And I am looking forward to spring because my first wedding of the new year is in March but more importantly it is in Newport Beach, California.

I had high school in California and I certainly miss it. So it’ll be fun. And looking back at some old photographs of a wedding I shot at the Newport Beach Temple brings back memories of warm weather. This older wedding was photographed in January – and it was 60-70 degrees. Absolutely gorgeous. I can’t wait.
