Other Photographers – Yay for Name Dropping!Thursday, December 10th, 2009

I wonder if I ever get repetitive in my blog posts – am I repeating previous blog posts or other photos I have already blogged about? When I doubt I do a quick search of the blog and if not – go for it.

I know Thanksgiving was last week but I was just thinking about how I have really been blessed this past year and in particular to several photographers I helped out as a second shooter. For those unfamiliar with the term – a second shooter is hired to help the main photographer. I helped a number of photographers – but I will mention 3 today. The others will have to check back another time to see if I mentioned them.

The first two are an amazing wife and husband team – Heidi and Tim Uhl of Retrospect Studios. If I remember they were the first photographers I ever assisted at a wedding and the first photographers to hire me as a second shooter. They are just awesome people and a lot of fun. I learn a lot from them – and I constantly pick their brains for tips, tricks and even just to hear their stories of weddings they have shot.

The other photographer is my friend Brian Gordon – he is an up and coming photographer. He had me second shoot at a wedding in Bountiful at the beautiful Canterbury Place. And it was a blast.

And in the new year I hope I get the chance to photograph for them again. And I am hoping to photograph for other photographers as well. The photography scene in Utah is quickly becoming a great community.

Ok, ok the little guy in the suit wasn’t the second photographer – and who can blame him for taking some cool photos of the bride and the wedding party. I had the opportunity to photograph with Heidi from Retrospect Studios yesterday at Noah’s event center in South Jordon. I love second shooting.

Second photographers can shoot from other angels, you get twice the coverage, the second photographer can shoot the mundane and mandatory photos and free up the first photographer to be more creative. And for the bride you can get a heck of a lot more shots or options for shots.

For the photographers you can learn from each other and you can bounce ideas off of each other. And if you shoot with the same equipment sometimes you can try out a new lens.

The Almost Kiss

When photographing a couple I have what I call the Almost Kiss. You want the glance in the eyes – the bride and groom looking at each other – and if you capture the anticipation for a kiss that is the moment.

I was so lucky to photograph this couple. I was shooting second for Heidi Uhl of Retrospect Studios. She was photographing with a wide angle lens at the time so I switched to my zoom lens and I was able to capture this Almost Kiss.
