Lisa and Noah’s Newport Beach EngagementsFriday, March 19th, 2010

Typically you want to photograph your engagements several months before the wedding – and sometimes if we are in different states that might not be an option. Fortunately we can photograph engagements the day before the actual wedding. With Lisa who lives in Chicago, and I am living in Salt Lake City, and the wedding was going to be in Newport Beach, California.

So I showed up a day early and we hit the beach as the sun hit golden light and the sun was setting. We photographed on a getty, on the beach, and one of the piers. Just beautiful light and beautiful setting – and the cutest couple. Hopefully I will have more opportunities to head to California in the future.

Lots of kissing during formal wedding photographySunday, December 20th, 2009

I was helping second shoot this wedding in Wolf Creek this past summer and the bride and groom were constantly kissing each other. And that is awesome! I think the best photographs at weddings are the natural photographs – where the bride and groom are just naturally touchy feely. Occasionally we would have to ask them to actually look at the camera but only for a few shots.

Sometimes you gotta be fun and quirkyWednesday, December 9th, 2009

I recently attended a lighting clinic in Salt Lake City where there were about 200+ photographers learning different lighting set ups. And one of the models was a bride – and of course everyone wanted to photograph this gorgeous woman. However, I didn’t want to walk away with the exact same photograph that every other photographer was creating. Who wants to blend in and be normal? I don’t.

So I grabbed a prop – I had a photography magazine that I had the bride read as I created this photograph. I thought it was a lot of fun – and figured I would share it with you. Yes there is a danger that gimmicks or some props may look too over the top – but that is why if something doesn’t work – I just delete the photo. But it can be a lot of fun to think outside the box and try something different.

Stand out – be different.

Tom & Kristi’s Engagement PhotographsTuesday, December 1st, 2009

If you don’t know I was raised in the military. My dad served both in the Army and the Air Force and we moved constantly. And living in the military often requires sacrifice on the service members as well as their families.

Tom and Kristi both serve in the military. They have dated for about a year and a half and there is a very likely chance that Tom was going to be transferred soon. And they had planned on getting married – and with the chance of moving they had to get married almost immediately. It was faster than eloping.

So they were married without family, friends, wedding reception or big wedding bash. So I was selected to photograph them after the fact. So these photographs count as their engagements, wedding photographs, and more importantly – photographs to be sent to their families so the families can see the new bride and groom together.

You can see all their engagement photographs on my SmugMug gallery.

We started in front of the Capitol Theater in Salt Lake City, Utah. And we walked around the block finding cool locations and backdrops for the photographs. These area is really photogenic. And even in late November the weather was perfect! And the photographs turned out perfect as well. ( I am not beyond boasting )

Most of these photographs were taken with one lens – I can do a lot of amazing photographs with a 50mm lens. I get the artistic blurry backgrounds – which really brings the focus on our couple. And I don’t have to stand 30 feet away to achieve the same effect with a 70-200mm lens.

And here are some photographs that feature the wedding rings. Kristi’s wedding ring had a gorgeous setting – and was surrounded by other diamonds.

And I love it when the wedded couple get all cuddly – sometimes I have to encourage people to break the rules of PDA ( Public Displays of Affection ). And in the case of photography there are no rules so don’t be afraid to hold hands, kiss, whisper sweet nothings in the ear.

We were lucky to find one tree that still had yellow and red autumn leaves. So we were able to snap a few photographs with the leaves as a background.

The following photograph I created with the concept of 1930′s New York. I am imitating Kodak Tri-X film which is a contrasty black and white film. It reminds me of the New York photographs of skyscrapers.

There is nothing wrong with a Costco weddingFriday, September 18th, 2009

Turkey wraps were the entre at a recent wedding reception

Turkey wraps were the entre at a recent wedding reception

There is nothing wrong with a Costco wedding or Costco wedding reception. Love is love and you celebrate as you can afford it. It may not make sense to spend 20,000 or more for a wedding. You don’t want to go broke. Granted I would love your budget to have room for me as your kick butt photographer. But live within your means.

Recently I photographed a wedding reception where the catering was from Costco. People had a great time and the bride and groom were able to celebrate with friends and family. My dad is the king of frugal and so I can see him shopping in Costco for the next family wedding.
