Prime LensesSunday, January 10th, 2010

I love prime lenses – the only way theses lenses can zoom is with my feet. Two of these lenses are a standard f/2.8 – nothing to exciting. But two of these lenses are f/1.8 and f/1.4 – which is my favorite feature of many prime lenses. They can shoot with a very shallow depth of field and they can shoot in very low light situations.

I photograph about 95% of the time with a prime lens. There are times where a zoom lens is the only way to go – during a wedding ceremony when I am capturing all the happening and going on. But for portraits, details and more when it is important to slow down and compose a photograph – prime lenses are my go to choice.

In the next year I am planning on adding a Canon camera and some Canon prime lenses to my line up. The Canon prime lenses are some that Nikon doesn’t bother creating. If things go according to plan I will have a new Canon 5D Mark II and a Canon f/1.2 50mm lens by the end of February.

I could talk gear all day.

It’s Camera Gear Sunday! The Nikkor f/2.8 14-24mmSunday, January 3rd, 2010

Yeah, Camera Gear Sunday isn’t going to be a regular feature but it does make for an interesting title. And it is fun to rave about a lens I love to use. And it is one reason I won’t be giving up Nikon anytime soon – it is the Nikon f/2.8 14-24mm lens. It is an ultra wide lens that can see everything at once – and even if it is dark. The one downside is it won’t hold a polarizing filter – but pobody’s nerfect.

If you are shooting Nikon – I highly recommend this lens. It is extremely sharp. It is f/2.8 so it can be used in low light situations.

This camera lens is a wedding workhorseSaturday, December 12th, 2009

I had 3 photo shoots today – non were wedding or wedding related. Well, actually one was a maternity photo shoot. However, that photo shoot will remain private and I won’t be sharing those images on any of my websites. Even with 3 websites I had some time to kill – so I photographed my lenses. I know, what kind of people do that? Only a photographer.

So here is a workhorse for wedding photography. It is the Nikkor f/2.8 70-200mm lens. This thing can see across a room, across a church, across most anything and capture tack sharp photographs. This lens is able to help keep me as a fly on the wall – a ninja with a lens. And this lens was photographed on paint covered ladder – rather symbolic – because lenses and cameras are nothing more than tools – creative tools.
