My New Year’s Resolutions for 2011Tuesday, January 11th, 2011

I have had some off and on success with New Year’s Resolutions. I have also worked pretty hard to identify goals and achieve them. I’m not perfect but that is why God invented the backspace key on a computer.

Here are my goals and resolutions for 2011. I won’t fail – failure is when you don’t get back on your feet after falling down. I plan to get up and go forward – even if it takes a few years.

Personal

I really need to work on my personal fitness and get back into great physical shape. That will help during 12 hour weddings and carrying camera gear around. And everyone wants a good looking photographer at their wedding – no one wants an eye sore.

  • Lose 30 LBS
  • Exercise 6 days a week
  • Return to water polo
  • Finish my dream board
  • Print out a large print at least once a month

Business

I take great photos and continue to get better. I need to get better at the marketing and business side of photography. So I am going to work on my work flow and turn around time. And I am going to work on blogging regularly – especially on this website. That will be my primary marketing tool for the year.

Financial

I need to stop spending money like a drunken sailor. I love the new toys but I need a bit more fiscal discipline and a budget. I want to be able to afford a new home with built in studio space in the next year or two.

  • Pay off all debt besides the car
  • Write out a monthly budget by hand – Excel is OK
  • Get in position to buy a house

Photography

I want to improve as a photographer and so I want improve my understanding of studio lighting on location and I want to become more of a fine art photographer and a fine art wedding photographer.

  • Develop my lighting skills with gels, modifiers, and white balance
  • Create 3 fine art photographs a month and put in a SmugMug gallery for my fine art

It may no be easy but nothing worth doing ever is easy. I am excited!

Cheers to a new year!

The New Year is a failure!Tuesday, January 5th, 2010

Ok, maybe I overreacted. But it is really hard to get into the annual New Year’s resolution of eating right and going to the gym – when the New Year begins on a weekend! On Sunday evening I ate a hamburger – and the first half of the hamburger tasted great – the second half of the hamburger tasted like guilt. Ugh. At least Monday rolled around I am doing pretty well on my fitness regimen. And even if I stumble I will pick myself up and keep going.

And now that it is the new year there are the fun details of wrapping up 2009. I am putting together all the paperwork to file taxes. Whoever said running your own business was a chance to work for yourself was WRONG. You end up working for your accountant, lawyers, tax professionals, and more.

Quickbooks

Quickbooks

For the last two years I have keep my books on actual paper – which is simple for me – but could be a headache for the accountant. So in 2010 I will be using Quickbooks. I am awesome in Photoshop – finance software might make me go insane!

At least I have photography to keep me sane and to enjoy life. Oh, and The Biggest Loser starts again on NBC – hoping I will find some inspiration.

Writing down New Year’s Resolutions for 2010Sunday, December 27th, 2009

In years past I rarely took New Year’s Resolutions serious – at least I never really wrote them down. I was fairly successful with the resolutions from 2009 – but I think I will do better this year. New Year’s resolutions are all about improvement – and setting goals. I have a lot more goals that I have set, however, this are my official New Year’s resolutions for 2010:

New Year’s Resolutions 2010

  1. Pay off all credit card debt
  2. Write a monthly budget for each month
  3. Lose 30 lbs
  4. Buy a new camera body – the Canon 5D Mark 2
  5. Buy 3 new camera lenses – the Canon 24mm f/1.4, Canon 50mm f/1.2, Canon 85mm f/1.2
  6. Use Quickbooks for book keeping
  7. Blog on my websites at least 5 days a week
  8. Add a film package to photography
  9. Shoot 25 weddings either as second photographer or as me
  10. Lower cholesterol
