New Self Portrait – Well I Had Someone Push the TriggerMonday, March 14th, 2011

Saturday morning about 8 photographers converged on the backyard for some off camera lighting practice. I think 7 of the 8 all are Canon based photographers – so naturally I wanted to take a few photographs with my medium format film camera. I have a Bronica film camera that I use occasionally – although it usually sits on the shelf.

Why all the photographers? We were practicing our off camera lighting techniques. This photograph is with my Canon 5DII on a tripod and I was going to photograph myself using a timer but another photographer volunteered to trip the shutter for me so I would know the photograph was in color.

I will probably share a few photographs from the day – some photos that are not of me. But I thought it would be fun to share a self portrait.

Evolution of HairThursday, February 10th, 2011

Today I had to get a new security card for my day job. Like most corporations one security measure is a plastic card with a photograph – and I thought it was hilarious the transformation.

So I present to you 2004′s photograph of the security photograph – I was growing out my curly hair. Skip two years and in 2006 my hair is the longest it has ever been and will ever be – this photograph is my current driver’s license photograph. And finally, 2011 you see my current hair cut – and that I have gained some weight in the face. I wish I could get a profile photograph to show off my mohawk. I think it is cool – but then I thought the long hair in 2004 and 2006 was cool.

I don’t mind being in front of the camera – but when the camera is a crappy security camera or the DMV – well they can’t take a good photograph to save a life.

I do have a goal to get in better shape and get some professional photographs created – this year. Maybe I should get some now and get them again when I am skinnier. You need to get photographs regularly just to keep a record of what you look like through your life.

Just so you know, I love to photograph people over and over again – and you don’t even need to get married again.

A Self Portrait on the Utah Salt FlatsTuesday, April 27th, 2010

Spring is taking for ever to bloom this year! We have had so much rain, snow and clouds it seems impossible that the weather will every dry out and warm up. On Sunday I was photographing a friend out at the Utah Salt Flats and he wanted to try his hand with a camera so he took a few shots with my camera and lighting.

The Utah Salt Flats are awesome – and this Sunday most of them were covered by water. So I need to find out when they dry out and are perfect for photography. I love this location and there is no extra cost to photograph there for bridals or engagements. We can always stop at Wendover for a quick buffet. Wendover is only 9 miles away from the Salt Flats.

And the Utah Salt Flats are perfect for me to bring my studio lighting and create some very dramatic photos with some cool lighting setups – and quite often there will be some kind of clouds in the sky to create these amazing backdrops.

I am hoping that the Salt Flats start to dry out in the next few weeks – cause right now most of them are like a giant lake or a puddle.

Visiting Ogden on a Photowalk

Visiting Ogden on a PhotowalkMonday, March 29th, 2010

I was in Ogden on Saturday to meet up with about 70+ photographers. We met up at the historic Union Station which is now a museum for trains, trains and more trains. If you are even a beginner photographer check out the Photowalking Utah website.

And I was the person charged with taking the group photograph. And so I created an HDR image here! I think that is a first for Photowalking Utah.

Photowalks are a chance to meet other photographers and talk technique, equipment, and even make new friends. It is also a great chance to scout locations to photograph. And downtown Ogden is really a remarkable location. And the train museum as well. I can see using the location for some engagement photographs and maybe even some bridals. Who wouldn’t think a bride on top of a train would be a cool image. That would rock!

And while I was photographing someone photographed me! So here is a picture of me in action.

dav.d in a parking garage

dav.d in a parking garage

It is a blog post all about me! I believe I am one of the very few photographers who likes to be on both sides of the lens. I love having my photograph taken – granted I would love it more when I finally lose my flab – but that is a work in progress.

This weekend I was practicing my photography – practice makes perfect – and I was working with some photographer friends. I was able to get a them to photograph me for a few frames. I then edited these to give them a rough edgy look. I like them a lot. Now I need to work on losing that flab and then I can get some more photos taken.
