Megan’s Bridals on the Wedding DaySunday, January 30th, 2011

Traditionally you take bridal photographs some weeks or months before the wedding day. It is a chance to wear the dress and get some formal photographs for the wedding reception. And more importantly it is so we have some amazing photographs of the bride that hopefully border on fashion and just make the bride feel like a princess.

So, I have no problem photographing bridals the day of the wedding and even after the wedding. After the wedding I like to call them “post wedding bridals.”

With Megan, we had to wait till the day of the wedding since she and the wedding were based in Pennsylvania and I am based in Salt Lake City. That is one of the downsides of having an out of town or destination photographer. However, it is something I can work with.

I hope you enjoy these photos! I just finished editing them for the wedding album and the bride will be able to review the wedding album tomorrow online. Yay!

Emily’s BridalsTuesday, August 17th, 2010

I had the opportunity to help out with a bridal session with my friend Brian Gordon. He was photographing a beautiful bride down in Provo, Utah and he asked if I would like to tag along and play the role of assistant and as a second shooter. It was a lot of fun and he gave me some opportunity to photograph Emily as well. Here are some of my favorite photographs.

Since there were two photographers we would take turn using a reflector and an off camera speedlite for the photos. We photographed next to the Provo Tabernacle (there is a small grassy park with some wonderful sunlight). We then finished our photo shoot at the Utah County Courthouse.

Since we were in front of the courthouse and they have some long stone staircases we thought it would be fun to recreate the story of Cinderella losing her slipper. And since Emily’s shoe is golden it really helps create a fun photograph.

MacKenzie’s Bridals in Memory Grove, UtahTuesday, August 10th, 2010

Sometimes it is just torture to sit on some photographs and keep them a secret. I have been waiting to share these bridal photographs of MacKenzie for about 2 months. She wanted to be traditional and keep the wedding dress a secret till the wedding day.

For her bridals we went to Memory Grove and we had some wonderful natural light to work with and I have to have some of my own softbox and lighting to help the light look perfect. I am writing this blog post before I head out to photograph MacKenzie & Stan’s wedding this afternoon. I am very excited! Woo hoo!

Testing slideshow software on bridal photographyMonday, October 26th, 2009

This is a test of animoto.com‘s slideshow software which is available to photographers. If this works well I will make slideshows available for engagements, bridals, and weddings. Although this is their low resolution version I think this is going to rock!

Being a wedding photographer is a “catch 22.” People want to see your wedding photography and your bridal photography before they ever consider to have you be a wedding photographer. But if you haven’t photographed a bride how do you show off the photographs?

You beg brides who have recently been married to pose for some bridal photographs. And so I photographed Jennifer – who was married back in January. We picked the Provo Castle for our backdrop – that gives us access to the castle and to the orchards.

An orchard plays a perfect scene for bridal photography

And we were lucky that there were apples on the trees – there were also a ton of deer as well. But they were too far away for the photographs. How cool would that be for a bridal portrait with an apple on the tree and deer surrounding our bride? Very Snow White indeed.

This photograph was taken with natural light

For most of the photographs we used a softbox to provide some light. I love to have the sun as a backlight and the softbox to act as a fill light. However, for some of our last shots we went all natural light and ditched the softbox. Variety is the name of the game in bridal photography.

It is called acting. We didn’t pick the apples – we didn’t want to disrespect the orchard.

You can take photographs virtually anywhere – because it is the person that is the subject of the photograph. Backgrounds or the environment where you photograph is secondary and shouldn’t distract from the bride.

I love the Nik Software plugin called Silver Efex Pro. Why? It helps me create custom black and white images that kick things up a notch. Armatures will just desaturate an image – I want full control and Silver Efex Pro gives me the control.

Sometimes you want a very stylized look – it doesn’t work all the time – but here it works great. I love the punchy look.

Sun flare used to be frowned on – and for good reason. But it can be used artistically – and this works.

After I delivered these photographs to Jennifer, the bride, she emailed me back very excited:
You are simply amazing! I just want to scream for my joy!

That is why I love being a photographer – I love to see the reaction people have when they see my photography.

It was really cool to have red ripe apples in the orchard. They added a touch of color and even acted as a prop to the photographs. In the spring I would love to photograph when the the trees have flowers blooming.

I love adding texture to photographs – you can easily overdo textures in photographs but using sparely they can add extra dimension to a photo.
