A bride is framed by trees for this photograph
Being a wedding photographer is a “catch 22.” People want to see your wedding photography and your bridal photography before they ever consider to have you be a wedding photographer. But if you haven’t photographed a bride how do you show off the photographs?
You beg brides who have recently been married to pose for some bridal photographs. And so I photographed Jennifer – who was married back in January. We picked the Provo Castle for our backdrop – that gives us access to the castle and to the orchards.
An orchard plays a perfect scene for bridal photography
And we were lucky that there were apples on the trees – there were also a ton of deer as well. But they were too far away for the photographs. How cool would that be for a bridal portrait with an apple on the tree and deer surrounding our bride? Very Snow White indeed.
This photograph was taken with natural light
For most of the photographs we used a softbox to provide some light. I love to have the sun as a backlight and the softbox to act as a fill light. However, for some of our last shots we went all natural light and ditched the softbox. Variety is the name of the game in bridal photography.

It is called acting. We didn’t pick the apples – we didn’t want to disrespect the orchard.
The Provo Castle has such cool stone work for cool photography texture
You can take photographs virtually anywhere – because it is the person that is the subject of the photograph. Backgrounds or the environment where you photograph is secondary and shouldn’t distract from the bride.
I used a special Photoshop plugin to create this black and white bridal photograph
I love the Nik Software plugin called Silver Efex Pro. Why? It helps me create custom black and white images that kick things up a notch. Armatures will just desaturate an image – I want full control and Silver Efex Pro gives me the control.
A very stylized photograph with sharp contrast to emphasize texture
Sometimes you want a very stylized look – it doesn’t work all the time – but here it works great. I love the punchy look.
I created a digital lens flare to add to the sun's flare - for a very golden look
Sun flare used to be frowned on – and for good reason. But it can be used artistically – and this works.

The orchard provided such a gorgeous backdrop for our bride
After I delivered these photographs to Jennifer, the bride, she emailed me back very excited:
You are simply amazing! I just want to scream for my joy!
That is why I love being a photographer – I love to see the reaction people have when they see my photography.
Light is the name of the game in photography. Sun and a softbox were our tools.

It was really cool to have red ripe apples in the orchard. They added a touch of color and even acted as a prop to the photographs. In the spring I would love to photograph when the the trees have flowers blooming.

When you have the chance to use a prop like an apple - use it
I love adding texture to photographs – you can easily overdo textures in photographs but using sparely they can add extra dimension to a photo.

Black and white is cool - but color will always rule the day for photographs
