Protect the Camera GearMonday, March 28th, 2011

This past Saturday I went down to the Holi Festival of Color in Spanish Fork – and I went with a camera. I live by the Boy Scout motto of “Be Prepared” – I am an Eagle Scout after all.

I knew the festival was going to be a fun yet potentially hazardous place for any kind of electronic or photographic equipment. And I don’t like to take chances. I like to be prepared. I have rain gear for my cameras, I have back up gear, and I try to anticipate challenging situations.

For this event I protected the camera from the dusting using a plastic rain bag designed to protect cameras from rain. This was secured with tape, rubber bands, and a UV filter. And it worked great! No dust in the camera or on the camera.

This preparation applies to any type of photography assignment. Weddings at the beach, or weddings in the snow. Be prepared and think ahead. Always have a back up plan. I had another two cameras in the trunk of my car – along with more rain protectors, tape, and rubber bands.

As for me? I brought a spare set of clothing, wet wipes, bath towels for the seats of the car. I was prepared. Yay scouting!

And this photograph was taken by fellow photographer Jeff McGrath. We carpooled down to the temple from Salt Lake. It is always fun to photograph with other photographers.

If you want to see some of the photographs from the event you can see them on my SmugMug site.

What’s in Today’s Camera Bag?Thursday, December 10th, 2009

For several years now I have used the Lowepro Fastpack 350 for my day to day use. And I thought it would be fun to open it up today and show you want I happen to be carrying. Usually I have one DSLR – but today I have two. I am taking some headshots this afternoon and I brought along a back up. Any time I am having a professional photo shoot I bring my two camera bodies – the Nikon D300 and Nikon D90. One acts as a back up – you never know if Murphy’s Law will strike and something breaks.

For lenses I packed the Nikkor f/1.4 50mm, the Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 DI, and Lensbaby Composer. I bring the Lensbaby along just for fun and just for those moments where I want something unique and different. I have one Nikon SB-800 with me – I have more flashes stowed away for the big shoot. Maybe I should do a video sometime where I empty out my camera bag and show the various things – show off my Boy Scout skills of “being prepared.”

Not shown in the bag are my other supporting items: laptop, memory cards, Canon SX200 IS (my point and shoot), cable release, rechargeable AA batteries, camera batteries, lens cleaning cloth, business cards.

Rose Wedding Bouquet – Don’t Put Your Camera AwayThursday, September 17th, 2009

The wedding bouquet was just laying there, ready to be photographed

The wedding bouquet was just laying there, ready to be photographed

As a wedding photographer I don’t put the camera away until I am in my car. You don’t want to miss a shot. You never know what you might encounter on the way to the car.

As the wedding ends people are still in a celebration mood. Or in the case of the bouquet it has been placed there by the bride and I just dropped to one knee and took a quick photograph. I bounched the light on the wall to the left of the camera and BAM! cool photo!

So don’t assume the photographs are over as soon as the wedding is over.
