Judge Brown let’s a “professional photographer” have it!Wednesday, March 3rd, 2010

This video has been circulating the interwebs today – and it is worth watching. It goes to show that not all photographers are created equal. When pressed the photographer didn’t know the speed of her lens, she only owns two lenses and an entry level camera.

What impressed me most was the knowledge of photography that Judge Joe Brown has – and I can imagine he loves photography as a hobby – which just rocks! So watch the clip

Every photographer needs to be open and honest about themselves and their skills. And people should definitely realize that you get what you pay for. I hope I don’t sound like I am on a high horse or preachy.

In the digital age anyone with a camera can bill themselves as a photographer and the wedding photography industry can definitely suffer if everyone who has a camera thinks and advertises themselves as a professional.

Top Secret Meetings – Here is Some of the ScoopThursday, February 11th, 2010

I am going to be pretty dang coy right now – I am not going to spill all the beans – just some of the beans.

A few weeks ago I was asked to put together some of my best portfolio pieces from weddings and engagements and send them to another photographer. Below is one of the photos that was selected. Someone was interested enough in my skills as a wedding photographer to consider me for some extra work that they may have in the future. And I am very excited.

Is this vague enough? All I will say is Associate Photographer. Cue the music!

And there has been a meeting to talk details and for me things are now cemented and moving forward. More will be announced when there is more cement with other cementees.

It is always cool when people see some skills that I might have. I just have to work on my marketing, branding, and second shooting skills.

Keep some dignity and avoid Denny’s Free Grand SlamMonday, February 8th, 2010

It is $6.99! For goodness sakes stay away from Denny’s tomorrow. People are going to line up early early in the morning in hopes of getting free pancakes, eggs, and bacon. There will be some people who will take the day off from work to get a free meal.

This makes no sense from the point of view of the consumer – sure you save a few dollars but you better tip your waiter/waitress. But take a day off of work? Lets guess you make $80 for the day – you are using a paid vacation day or worse not making your $80 to save 7-8 bucks.

And it is a news media bloodbath – because as you know there is no news but soft news. But for the most part it will be great publicity for Denny’s. People will be talking about Denny’s. Yes, the reports could be negative that people waited all day and got nothing. Or that Denny’s restaurants ran out of food at 10am. That will make some people mad.

However, any publicity even bad publicity is still publicity. And somehow Denny’s will benefit.

Me? I will keep my dignity and maybe I will spend $6.99 with 20% tip another day. But tomorrow – I am going to the gym an extra hour to just to make up the calories other people will be consuming.

Going to get some culture tonight with Avenue QTuesday, February 2nd, 2010

So excited for this evening! I am going to see Avenue Q at Salt Lake City’s historic Capitol Theater. I have heard a few songs from the Broadway show but other than that I have no clue what the show is about. All I know is that the comedy is not for the little ones – and I am perfectly fine with it.

I will admit I love humor that borderline offensive – as long as it is designed to poke fun at everything and everyone. South Park, Simpsons, and Family guy are my heroes.

Maybe I should plan a trip to California so I can see some other Broadway shows – like Wicked. Roadtrip?

Lights, Camera, Makeup!Monday, February 1st, 2010

Trying to create the creative photo sometimes is challenging. The whole art of previsualization means I have a picture in my head and getting it captured by the camera can mean cheating with Photoshop.

I spent several minutes trying to capture a reflection of the bridesmaid eye in the reflection of the mirror. I was being the fly on the wall and not interfere – last thing I want to do is cause the bridemaid to get distracted and the makeup brush goes into the eyeball.

This photograph is me waiting for the eye to appear – it is a natural shot where the bridesmaid is working on her makeup. But the reflection in the small mirror is of her fingers.

So I posed the shot and had the bridesmaid look at me in the mirror while she worked on her makeup. Unfortunately with this shot she is no longer working on the makeup – but just holding the compact. What do to do?

Hooray for Photoshop – it makes good photos great. I took the eye in the compact’s mirror and place it into the first photograph. So we get the best of both photos. And we get the original idea I had for a photo. Yay!

Hooray for Photoshop!

Apple Introduces the iPad – Photographers Take NoteWednesday, January 27th, 2010

Today Apple finally caved into all the rumor and speculation and introduced the iPad. It falls in between the iPhone and laptops. It will challenge Amazon.com on the Kindle and the e-book market. I was expecting the iPad to be priced between $899 and $999. However, it is priced at $499-$830 depending on the model. And I think I might eventually get one.

Why? I am trying to read more books. Blogs and browsing would be awesome for the iPad. And finally it could be a really cool way to review photographs with potential brides. I could show off my photographs in a very elegant form factor. We shall see if that is a good idea or not.

I am a tech head at heart – you can woo me with technology. Cameras, computers, iPods, TVs, and more – they are the sure fire way to get my attention.

A Crazy Week at Sundance Film FestivalTuesday, January 26th, 2010

I haven’t had a lot of time for blogging and working on my marketing for dav.d wedding photography. I have been photographing for a documentary that is featured at the Sundance Film Festival. It is a controversial movie – but one that I think everyone show see. I even have film credits.

It is suggested that I remain neutral in any kind of political discussion if I am ever to become a popular wedding photographer. But I also think I am an artist and artists are a bit uncoventional. If you want you can read a little bit about the documentary on my other website.

But here are some non-controversial photographs of the Egyptian Theater in Park City and a rather cool twilight photograph of Main Street.

Beware exploding soda cans!Thursday, January 21st, 2010

Who knew working inside a cubical could be a life threatening profession? I was going over a website with co-workers at my day job and suddenly there is this loud pop – and for once I didn’t scream like a girl. However, I did jump.

Turns out a soda can exploded in a mini fridge right next to my desk. I even took a photo of the can. I am not a fan of Mountain Dew’s Code Red – so no loss there, but it was a mess.

And yes, I do scream like a girl when I am scared.
