Learning Color Calibration and Color Management

There are few people in this world who are green – or have a green complexion. Well, maybe after a night of binge drinking and Taco Bell there are more green people that I would have thought. However, most people aren’t green – so why do so many photographers have green people, or magenta people, or yellow people?

It is important that photographs printed on canvas, wedding albums, paper or even coffee mugs look accurate. I have my system of color management and this class was a chance to see how another photographer manages their color calibration. And from the class it looks like I am doing all the right things, yay!

Thanks to Pete Stott who gave the class – he did a great job. And I think he answered a lot of people’s questions. He even went through a demonstration and showed how other mega billion dollar companies manage their color workflow.

He uses the ColorChecker Passport – the same kind that I use. We use different monitor/display calibration devices but they do the same thing. He uses an X-Rite ColorMunki and I use the Spyder 3 Elite. Both are capable of calibrating multiple monitors. The ColorMunki does a few other cool neat things but for the time being I don’t need that – but I am sure some day I will switch over.

Most people may never notice if a color is perfect – but it is my job to make sure that I create the best looking photographs I can. I think having the best color is one way to help achieve that goal.
