Utah’s First UnWPPI

Every year in Las Vegas about 16,000 photographers will assemble for the WPPI – the Wedding Portrait Photographer International conference. It is part tradeshow and part classes/course and a lot of fun apparently. I can only imagine the hangover one has afterwards.

I haven’t been to a WPPI yet. Last year I had a Newport Beach wedding that same week. This year I was just too swamped to go – maybe next year.

However, a number of photographers decided to organize a meetup for photographers who did not go to WPPI. We called it the UnWPPI. This was very spur of the moment and we organized it via Twitter and Facebook.

Each photographer gave a 5 minute presentation on a topic of their choosing. Torsten gave a presentation – and I took a few photographs during his presentation.

My 5 minutes were spent talking about the expodisc for white balance and the ColorChecker Passport. Both of these tools were recently purchase by me but I use them regularly in my photography.

And I’ll even share with you one of benefits of the ColorChecker Passport! We have a color chart from the Passport. It shows on the left the colors straight out of a Canon 5DII and on the right are the colors corrected with the ColorChecker Passport.

The color profile created with the ColorChecker Passport is clearly improved (and more accurate). The purples, blues, and oranges are more saturated.

I think we will have to have another UnWPPI again next year (although I think I will try to make it to WPPI next year). It is just fun to hang out with other photographers and exchanges ideas and learn from each other!

Afterwards we went to Applebee’s for some appetizers and I think we ate too much.
